Winsor & Newton Series 7 - The World's Finest Water Color Brush
By Order of the Queen
More than any other tool, the brush is a direct and fluid extension of the artist’s hand, eye and expressive vision. It is with that principle in mind that Winsor & Newton has crafted fine artists’ brushes for over 150 years, earning a reputation for making the world’s finest from the very best raw materials. The standards of quality for this brush were set in 1866, when her majesty Queen Victoria gave orders that Winsor & Newton, holders of the Royal Warrant, be commanded to produce the very finest water color brushes in her favorite size the No. 7.
There are three essential qualities that define the finest water color brush: Point, Snap & Spring and Flow Control. Since 1866, the handmade Series 7 has proven itself to be the standard –bearer in all those qualities, offering a rapier-like point, perfectly balanced spring with extraordinary capacity and flow control. For artists who appreciate exquisite quality and longevity, there is no other brush than the Winsor & Newton Series 7.
Manufacturing
Winsor & Newton Series 7 brushes are prepared entirely by hand in our brush factory in England, in the same facility since 1946. Experience is the key which will turn an average brush maker into an expert Series 7 brush makers.
Technical Anatomy of a Series 7 Brush
Three essential qualities that define the finest watercolor brush:
|
|
|
---|---|---|
PointEvery Series 7 brush should come to a crisp point and maintain that point during use. Pointing without color – swirl the brush in water, give the brush head a hard flick of the wrist. Point when painting – drain excess color into palette and then twist brush head gently to get the perfect point. |
Snap and SpringThe brush snaps back crisply into shape with the right degree of spring to allow the artist superior control with a degree of give and take between the brush and painting surface. |
Flow Control – Speed and control of paintingThe larger belly of the Series 7 brush hold more color than other sable brushes and this makes applying washes so much easier. Along with the color carry capacity the Series 7 comes with such a fine point too. The same fine line can be achieved with a size 10 as it would be with a size 0 as the reason for the larger size brush is when you want a reservoir of color. |
The Series 7 range
The unique features of a Series 7 brush are its wider belly coupled with a long tapered point.

Still works great, a tip for retaining the tip (heh): dip the tip in a droplet of water after you clean it, the water holds the hairs together. Just a tiny drop is enough.

What I will comment on is this was shipped and delivered promptly and more importantly in pristine condition. I know a lot of people shy away from purchasing high end brushes for fear of damage in shipping. The brush was capped with a protector and the whole thing was then sealed in another plastic tube. The end result was a brush in perfect shape when it arrived on my doorstep. No bent bristles, no smashed ferrules, just a good clean product ready for use.
