Customers like the performance of the tool post. They mention that the proper tool holders work well, the supplied hardware worked perfectly, and it works great on a mini lathe. The trial runs have proven successful, and the product is well packaged. It's fast to change tools and very accurate. It works great for plastic and aluminum, but steel will need a lighter touch.

Customers are mixed about the quality of the tool post. Some mention it's well made and suited for occasional use, with a durable silver finish. However, others say that it'd be better suited to working with tougher materials, with an aluminum body that's not robust enough for precision machine work. The screw is pretty weak and will break if you put too much pressure on it. Overall, the product is not made for everyday use.

"...as a stud to hold it to the hub, the grub screw is pretty weak and will break if you put to much pressure on it , I will probably make a new steel..." Read more

39 customers mention13 positive26 negative

Customers are mixed about the material of the beauty tool. Some mention it's cheap and lightweight aluminum, while others say it strips easily when tightening the screws. Some say it'll work well for brass or aluminum work, while other say it is terrible for steel works.

"...that hold the actual cutting tools are aluminum castings that are roughly machined ...and that is being kind...." Read more

"It's cheap, no doubts about it. The main block is aluminum, tools fit kind of loose, but add a couple shims in the dovetail to tighten up the gap..." Read more

"...Now for the bad news. The tool holders are made from Aluminum and are not very high quality...." Read more

19 customers mention12 positive7 negative

Customers are mixed about the adjustability of the tool. Some mention that it provides easy height adjustment, while others say that the height adjust barely touches. The post is very sloppy and causes issues trying to set tool height. The tool post is flimsy, and the tool height varies while cutting.

"...a new steel handle for it, other than that, it works good, adjustable height is good and the bit mounts hold pretty good, it does make changing bits..." Read more

"...On my lathe, the height adjustment goes to the very top - the threads are barely long enough...." Read more

"...Tools repeat position when changed out, adjusting the height is pretty painless, and surprisingly it's rigid enough to face and chamfer some 3/4"..." Read more

48 customers mention14 positive34 negative

Customers are dissatisfied with the fit of the tool holders. They mention that the toolholders are not snug fit in the dovetails, making accurate repeatability difficult. They also mention that tools fit loosely, and the cam shaft would not fit within the base. The dovetailed is not the same size as a typical OXA wedge-type quick change tool post, and is barely large enough to work.

"...The down side, is that the fit for the blade holders is rather sloppy, and so I have to be extra cautious, at any change, to make sure it is aligned..." Read more

"...None of the blocks fit properly, there was such a big gap between the tool blocks and the quick change post that nothing was steady...." Read more

Customers are dissatisfied with the handle of the beauty tool. They mention that it snaps, breaks, and strips off after only a few uses. Some say that the screw in the handle stripped the aluminum thread within 10 minutes of use. Overall, customers are not happy with the quality and durability of the handle.

Its Less Than 40 Bucks - Whadaya want?
I purchased this 5 years agp to use on a mini lathe that I use solely for screw cutting and internal threading. I consider myself a skilled machinist (I build live steam locomotives) and I knew what I was getting for less than $40. My hope was that I could modify it and make it truly useful...and I did.First off, the tool post and the cartridges that hold the actual cutting tools are aluminum castings that are roughly machined ...and that is being kind. The major problems were (1) the base of the tool post is not flat, (2) the cartridges are a very loose fit and (3) the "buttons'" that are supposed to fix the cartridges can not keep the cartridges from rocking up and down. The first thing I did was machine the foot of the tool post to be absolutely flat and I inserted a steel bushing into the bottom of the tool post that prevented movement of the tool post when secured to the top slide (see photo 1). The cartidge tool holders are secured by small aluminum buttons held in place by O rings. As the tool holder handle is rotated, an eccentric column presses against the buttons and they are forced out against the tool-holding cartridge. Unlike a true Aloris tool holder, there is no vice-action securing the cartridge in place. This aluminum button does not prevent the cartridge from rocking and hence the tool height varies while cutting. This rocking was solved by inserting brass shims between the cartridge and tool holder. (see photo).I did a few other minor tweaks, but ultimately I had a tool post that would accept interchangeable cartridges holding cutting tools. If you think of this as a set of castings that need some work, you may very well be happy with the product after modification. Remember too this is intended for a mini-lathe where there is no rigidity and therefor your cuts have to be light. I have successfully used the modified tool post to hold HSS/carbide bits for cutting, facing and threading as well as, internal boring and parting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Value

For what it is, it's great. I have an Aloris on my South Bend and I really like it. I do know what and how a good tool post works. When I "needed" a small lathe for clock work I bought a used Sherline and it came with no tooling. When I originally installed this tool post, as many have reported it was not very rigid. I saw where it was rocking and built a base that holds the TP to the Sherline's cross slide much more firmly. Made a massive improvement. Took it apart and lubed the pistons and cams. It feels just fine now.

If you want to throw "blue 9's" across the shop this isn't for you. If you want to cut aluminium, brass, and occasionally 12L14 it'll work just fine. Light cuts, watch your feeds and speeds. The cost to replace my Aloris in now ~ $1500. This is less than $50. IMHO a heck of a value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Necesita adaptación para poder ser utilizada!
Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2023
