I have made many cables using this setup and have not seen a single error.
This is a fantastic combination of components.
In my experience the wire is situation dependent. You want stranded for flexibility of patch cables which may be bent or moved with any regularity. Solid has worked best for long runs. I have used these with both without any issues. Make sure you consider your cable type and size whenever purchasing components and take time to setup your tools properly prior to starting your job.
Once I complete a crimp I always pull on the strain relief and connector independently. I have not had one come loose and do not expect it too, but with some wear in and a few years of use I could see the retention tab of the strain relief being too small and easy to break if it catches on something when being moved from one location to another.
I also use a cable tester and I pull / push / apply stress to the connector while testing it. Intermittent or overall poor connections are not an option.
I am being picky on the strain relief because I have high expectations. I paid what I feel is top dollar for not only the easy (EZ) part of these components but I expect the best and I feel like the EZ RJ45 connector is the best I have used.
You can use as much wire as you want, put the strain relief on, strip off 1.5" of insulation, get your wire untwisted - in the correct order, slide the EZ RJ45 connector on and crimp. The wire is automatically cut.
The easy part gets 5 stars, and the fact that you are able to keep the original wire twists all the way up to the point where the wire is crimped in the connector is a great engineering accomplishment. I would tip the engineer personally if I knew the person.
Obviously you should be using the right crimpers which cut the wire off the end of the connector and crimp the connector and strain relief all in one smooth motion. I already had an expensive set of good crimpers, plenty of connectors, etc but I was sold by the items I mentioned above about the twists and actually how easy the whole thing comes together.
If you are new to crimping CAT6 go this route and you will not be disappointed or have hand soreness from trying to manipulate the "traditional" styles of connectors. I'd be willing to bet even the old experienced hands at making CAT x will enjoy this better than what they currently use.
An IT guy I know buys all of his cables because he states you can never make them yourself as well as the machinery used by large companies can make them, and that you will never be as consistent. If getting to the level of testing which can tell the difference between a cable I made with these versus a machine and it can see the difference then I agree, by all means purchase your cables. Cables only a few feet long it will cost less to purchase them if you know where to go, and if your time is worth anything. However with the time it takes to use this setup there is no way you can purchase the same quality I make in any cable with a significant length.
The Platinum connectors and crimpers give me the ability to make what I feel are just as good and better than anything made by anyone or any machine. I know it is done right while being easy and fast.
Take pride in your work and do it once.
If anyone has any questions feel free to reach out to me as I welcome any comments.
By the way, as noted by another reviewer, the connectors crimp just fine with a standard rj45 crimper. Although, Platinum Tools crimper would make the job easier and cleaner, I didn't see justifying the extra cost when my inexpensive pair worked just fine. On a side note, for the extra wires hanging out, get a good "side" cutter or small wire snips. I picked a pair up for $4 at the local electronic store. Because of the way the end is, I found I was able to get the most professional cut but snipping each of the six wires individually close to where the wires exit through the plastic holes.
Also, connectors work great with Platinum Tools PL-100036 RJ45 CAT 6 clear plastic strain reliefs. I couldn't find them on Amazon, so I got them from cableorganizer and they shipped very very fast. It's an extra cost for the reliefs, but the final result is very professional.
I first bought these along with the crimper for home because I just like the right tools and see little reason to fight things all the time. These connectors make the job so easy that anyone with common sense and make a quality crimp. I have seen people say that they have had issues with the bar break the clip when crimping and others saying they have had "bad" crimps. I experienced the broken bar 1 time, the first time i did it and it was my own fault; I didn't have the strain relief (which I ordered and love to death on these) and I crimped down and cracked off one of the little hooks. I have not seen a bad crimp yet and I use a Fluke MT-8200 to check myself as well.
When you slide the wires in, I like to make them extra long. This gives yourself more play to see what is happening and to have the room to pull wires through and leave space at the opening for maneuvering. What is an extra inch or two of wire going to do to you? When all are inserted and they do guide through easily, I gently pull the wires out while pushing the connector as far back on the plenum as you can. Take note that since the connector is clear, you can look right down and see whether or not you have a massive crossing thing going on. If so, slide it back out and move the wire that is out of place. This WILL happen until you get a pattern down. Do one, learn. Do another, learn some more. Pretty soon you will be making connections just fine. Also note that the cable you are using makes a huge difference. Not all wire is the same diameter as the jacket and core of the wire may be slightly different. You may have a Cat6 wire, but no pull core which gives stability when pulling long distances while taking the stress of the pull instead of the twisted pairs. Great for pulling the cable but it adds diameter. I think maybe some people are using cheaper wire with a smaller diameter which allows the crimper to really crunch down, breaking the plastic. That is however opinion as I do not buy cheap cable. I am using Belkin #R7L704 UTP with killer success.
I did have one batch of these connectors in Cat6 that position 8 was really tight, like the front was too close already. Once I got 8 in, 7 was easier and the rest flew right in. That was the whole box of 50 that did that but it is not a deal breaker by any means. I bought the same crimper for work along with the reliefs and these connectors and saw none of the hard to insert wire points.
The strain reliefs: note that they ARE different between Cat 5 and 6 - FYI.
There are professionals that make cables daily and probably laugh at this setup saying that "you don't need it". Makes my life easier and I spend a lot less time elsewhere because of the speed I gain.
Top reviews from other countries
I am doing some cat 6 wiring in my house, and while researching connectors, I found many reviews of other products that claimed to support 23 AWG wires ended up being too tight a fit. A friend of mine recommended these connectors to me, and I'm glad to say that they have no problem fitting my cat 6 cables.
The Good Parts
* Fits 23 AWG wires without problem
* Easy to use
* Faster than the "traditional", non-passthrough method of wiring connectors
* Well made
Could Be Better
* Needs a special crimper to use properly, but you can use an old school crimper and wire cutters and get ok results
* Takes a bit of practice getting the wires in (it's easy after you've done a few though)
* The retention clip doesn't always seem to retain its resiliency to lock into jacks
* A little more expensive than many other brands, but I guess you get what you pay for
